iGoogle

By way of example below is my own iGoogle account with explanatory notes below. If Bernard and co goes with this each person would have their own which would be populated with things appropriate to the course but also personalised to their own tastes.

1. A theme can be set. I have chosen this one assigned to my post code showing different times of the day. As you can see I took this screen shot not long after sunrise.
2. Tabs can be added and in my example I have “other stuff” in three other tabs besides the home page
3. This is a set of bookmarks pertinent to my daily online life. This way I can set iGoogle as my home page and be on any site I need within one click
4. This is my g-Mail email account which I have chosen to show a preview of the most recent messages. Opens out into a full e-mailer. Participants may elect to have this forwarded to another email address they may have but the teams contact with them is though this g-Mail account
5. This is my files store in which there are documents and spread sheets. It previews the most recently accessed ones but opens up to the full document store. Documents could be shared with the participants for viewing only or could be opened up for collaboration.
6. The various email groups I am either a member of or managing.
7. The RSS feed of a particular website I am watching. This shows the most recent postings to the site. The content of many sites can be subscribed to in this way and I’m suggesting that the participants subscribe to a course blog.
8. The way I see this working is that participants are given their accounts and they add to them the items above or whatever is deemed to be the necessary components for the course. After that they could add whatever else they wish that appeals to them. This no 8 shows a couple of widgets I’ve added that are useful to me such as a dictionary and a currency converter. Many widgets are available.

Manchester in the Rain & a "VLE for Free"

We had a great day yesterday going through this. Whether or not the Manchester "Inspiring Leaders" team take this up I will certainly roll out a form of it on Teesside at some time.

Interestingly there is nothing we can see and therefore share with the PRADSA team because each persons iGoogle is personal to them. Something the Manchester group soon got the hang of as they personalised their learning spaces to suit their own personal interests and preferences and much fun was had.

There is a course blog (which learners would subscribe to in their iGoogle) but I'll leave it to Bernard and his colleagues to reveal the URL of that.

Since returning home I've experimented more with blogger and found easy ways to impliment some of the things the team were desirous of having.

1) Course Overview
2) Links to some PDF's (actually uploaded to Google Groups)
3) Videos including one shot directly into a £30 webcam

I think what is important is that none of this is dependent upon a highly skilled ICT "gatekeeper". It's all entirely DIY will only a reasonable level of ICT know-how.

iGoogle and Manchester

Yes despite a wet start the meeting went really well. I enjoyed trying out all the igoogle applications. I am sure Benard's participants will equally enjoy trying out all the different stuff there particularly as it all seems user-friendly and fun. It is easy to use and doesnt need a lot of IT support or know-how. The participants will also possiblky find it easy to demonstrate to others in their line of work. I see David has also brought to attention google apps. I have not had a chance to play around with it but if its got better features and even easier to use, then even better for Benard and his team should they decide to take it up.

We have learnt loads - THANK YOU!

Just to echo the above comments, my team and I really enjoyed Friday's meeting.

Steve's preparatory work and ICT knowledge helped us learn about the most applicable tools and why we needed them. We all feel much more confident about using the system and encouraging others to do so.

We will be meeting over the next few weeks to debrief from Friday and plan the learning programme and will update you all on the blog etc.

Once again - many thanks Steve!
